D participated in her first science fair on Saturday!
She had been studying water in science and was fascinated when watching the effect of salt on ice cubes. So with that in mind, I helped her run an experiment to determine the freezing point of 6 differing concentrations of salt water solutions.
This was the first time she had to think through the scientific method and come up with a hypothesis, variables, control, procedure, and materials list. Finally she was set to run the experiment. It was rather an easy test, put the salt water in the freezer, wait five minutes, then take it out and check the thermometer and record the temperature. The worst part was when the 30ml salt solution took almost 3 hours to freeze! She had a good lesson in patience!!! She then typed, printed, mounted and taped all the elements to her back board.
She was so very nervous before the fair began, A said she looked like she was going to lose her breakfast! Then in true fashion, D relaxed and put on a great presentation. Overall, she was awarded 2nd place. This experience has her fired up for next year already!

R organized and hosted her first science fair on Saturday!
After watching her big sister go to science fair after science fair last year, my darling D looked at me and said "May I go to a science fair?" In my head I knew the answer - only if I would organize it! Of course I would do almost anything for my children, especially anything promoting science education. So for the last few months I've been prepping for my big event. Originally I had 19 students interested in attending the home school science fair, but that dwindled down to 4. With help from Mom, I was able to have two corporate sponsors donate scientific awards, which the young scientists were thrilled about receiving. Overall it was a wonderful experience for all who attended - even my judges were enthused about the part they played. So since D is eager to attend next year's science fair - guess I'd better get planning!

Great job, D. Love the look of your presentation. Must have been fun doing those experiments.
Great job too, R. Sorry you had so many register and not follow through, but with the look on the faces of the remaining four, it was totally worth having this fair.
Remember, if you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the precipitate.
